Food for Life Partnership
CPD Events delivered by Garden Organic Programme for 2011
All course times are 9:30am – 3:00pm
The Food for Life Partnership is a network of schools and communities across England committed to transforming food culture. Together we are revolutionising school meals, reconnecting children and young people with where their food comes from, and inspiring families to grow and cook food.
The Food for Life Partnership provides a range of training opportunities for school, catering staff and individuals to support the delivery of food education to pupils, staff and the wider community. These sessions provide the knowledge and skills required to progress through the Food for Life Partnership award criteria.
COURSE TITLES:
Organic Food Growing in Schools
An introduction for people who want to start growing organic food at school. This is suitable for absolute beginners with no experience of gardening and will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze.
From Plot to Pot - planning what to grow
An opportunity to plan what to grow in a school garden, from seed sowing to harvest, including vegetables and herbs. Suitable for new school gardeners. This will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze and Silver.
Organic Fruit Growing
Choosing what to grow, how, when and where. Suitable for anyone new to growing fruit in school. This will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze and Silver.
Healthy Soil and Plants - the organic way
How to develop a healthy organic garden through soil care and management; and pest and disease prevention and control. Suitable for people who already have some experience of gardening. This will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Silver and Gold.
Master Composter for Schools
What to compost, how and where; and how to convey this learning to others. A detailed overview of the process with particular relevance to schools. Attendees will be required to support their local schools and the wider community with composting, and to pass on the important messages behind the Food for Life Partnership. This will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze.
An introduction to food growing for school cooks & caterers
An introduction to when locally grown fruit and vegetables are in season; composting food waste; and how to start growing food for the school meal. This will support schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze and Silver awards.
Business Enterprise in Schools through Organic Growing CPD
This will enable schools to successfully run an organic food growing-based enterprise project with young people as part of the curriculum. This will support schools working toward Food for Life Partnership Bronze and Silver awards.
Pruning fruit trees
Come and unravel the mysteries of pruning fruit trees at a lovely walled garden with a range of young and older trees. We will be outside most of the time, so come wrapped up and ready for the weather! Suitable for anyone new to growing fruit in schools, or who has planted trees and now need to know the best way to look after them.
Joint CPD Event - Delivered by Garden Organic and Soil Association Farm Links
This event will provide you with the opportunity to visit one of the Partnership's recommended farms and find out more about how you may set up your farm links programme.
Garden Organic will guide you through an introduction to planning a year round harvest in a school garden. Demystify composting and ideas for curriculum links. Suitable for new school gardeners.
This will support help schools working towards Food for Life Partnership Bronze and Silver.
From Plot to Pot – growing and eating from the land
This day is at the exciting new community growing project at the Rising Sun Farm, Our Hands on the Land. We will explore the extensive growing facilities; have a go at gardening and cooking activities as well as planning for growing at school. Suitable for new school gardeners, and anyone who wants to explore the links between growing, eating and embedding this into wider learning.
From Plot to Pot – growing and eating through the ages
Based at the fascinating Ryedale Folk Museum, this day will be an opportunity to link growing activities with life through the ages and try out some of the historic facilities to make our own lunch. We will explore the exhibits at the museum, including orchard, allotment and rare breed animals and link these to wider learning opportunities. No gardening experience necessary, just a desire to be inspired!
Seed Saving in Schools: Saving seeds for the future
Drawing on the expertise of Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library, this is an in-depth look at seeds and the importance of seed saving: dispersal, pollination and production. How to safeguard rare vegetable varieties from the threat of extinction. Practical seed-saving activities with links to wider learning that can be used in school to improve the sustainability of growing projects.

Garden Organic training for teachers – in partnership with Daylesford Organic
Garden Organic is working in partnership for a third year with the Daylesford Foundation to present organic gardening workshops for teachers and school professionals.
The training events are one day courses based in the kitchen garden at the Daylesford Organic Farmshop, Daylesford, Near Kingham, Gloucestershire, GL56 0YG. Teachers will develop their organic gardening knowledge and skills and be able to see large-scale organic growing in situ in the kitchen garden.
With the kind support of the Daylesford Foundation, the sessions are free of charge and include lunch.
Garden Organic’s Head of Education Colette Bond says, “We are delighted to be able to use such a fantastic venue to inspire and educate people. The more teachers we can engage in growing the more skills will be passed on to the youngsters they work with. The sessions we ran last year were very well received.”
