Garden Organic Local

At a venue near you...

Digging in green manures
The Garden Organic Local initiative aims to provide practical support for organic gardening at a locality near you

In our never-ending search to support and serve our members, we have been looking at ways to meet you where you live. Two of the major obstacles to enabling more people to learn to grow and enjoy the benefits in a safe and sustainable way are availability of land in the right places and access to good technical help. We want everyone to have a chance to grow their own organically. We have started by approaching some of the leading land-based colleges. Most have land, they certainly have expertise and we have authoritative knowledge. We now have a number of colleges interested in working with us on delivering Garden Organic Local. We now need to hear from anyone willing to volunteer to work with us locally and develop a good active programme with Garden Organic and the college. This could be a local group or an individual fired with the same enthusiasm that we have.

If you would like to be part of this exciting programme, please contact local@gardenorganic.org.uk or phone Bob Sherman (tel 024 7630 8218) or Julia Wright (tel 024 7630 8206).

The current group of colleges involved are:

Ecological innovation

One unexpected opportunity has arisen for members to help at the Building Research Establishment's Innovation Park near Watford. This internationally important site is a demonstration of the latest and most ecological building solutions and is open to the public. Here we are working on plans with PRP Architects to create organic growing spaces as part of new landscape around the latest group of eco-buildings.

Our ultimate aim is to have three food gardens and a community growing and composting space and then engage local people in learning to grow and make compost on these plots with the help of Garden Organic and its members. We would like to hear from anyone keen to help on this project as soon as possible as work has now begun.
